Abstract: With polyvinyl alcohol and sodium alginate as immobilizing carriers, and borate ammonium, ferrite chlorate and aluminum chlorate as cross-linking reagents, the spherical granules of immobilized Microbacterium sp. S2-4 were prepared, and their microenvironmental changes in the process of COD- removing from contaminated surface water were studied by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results indicated that physical block, adsorption, and the expulsion by predominant microbial populations were the main factors shielding the positive effects of the granules. Some structural disfigurements of the immobilized granules were pointed out.
