Abstract: “Ecological environment” is a term frequently employed in China, but often misused because there is no universal and explicit definition of it. This phenomenon has brought about some disadvantages to both theoretical study and practical work. In this paper, the origin of the term was traced, and different comprehensions of it were comparatively analyzed. It was considered based on the principles of ecology and environmental science that “ecological environment” was the integration of various ecological elements and relations, with specific organisms including human beings as the center, and emphasized the global nature, continuity, stability, coordinated evolution, and environmental functions of ecosystems.
