Abstract: Based on the theory of ecological footprint, the ecological economic system in Funing County of Jiangsu Province was analyzed in view of the demand and supply of natural resources by economic system. The concept of ecological deficit (ecological remainder) per ten thousand yuan GDP was proposed to evaluate the development of ecological economic system, and the society, economy, and ecological environment were considered as a whole. By using entire-array-polygon method and combining with calculated ecological deficit (ecological remainder) per ten thousand yuan GDP and Ulanowicz development capacity, the ecological economic system in Funing Coun-ty was evaluated. The results showed that in 1995—2003, the ecological deficit per ten thousandyuan GDP of Funing County decreased from 4.2278 hm² to 3.4704 hm², development capacity increased from 1.5751 to 3.5431, and comprehensive development index increased from 0 to 0.5051, illustrating that the ecological economic system in Funing County had a sustainable de-velopment, and the comprehensive index could properly reflect the development capacity of the region.
