Abstract: Since the practice of reform and open-door policy, the economy in the Pearl River Delta has been developed rapidly, with the population growing up significantly, which made a greater pressure on the resources and environment, and restricted the regional economic and social sustainable development. In this paper, the recent years’ temporal-spatial variation of population and its relationship with the economic development of this area were analyzed, and the results indicated that due to the increase of population, the possess of land and forest resources per person was further decreased, and the air and water pollution became more serious. It was of significance to solve the population problem for the sustainable development in Pearl River Delta. Strictly controlling population growth, rationally utilizing natural resources, optimizing economic structure, increasing investment for environment protection, and strengthening regional cooperation should be the essential countermeasures for realizing the sustainable development in this area.
