Abstract: The historical background of modular theory in plant population ecology and its main ideas were reviewed. The several related terms, including modukr and unitary organism, medule, genet, and metapopulation were interpreted. It was suggested that different levels of modular units could be selected for study according to the characteristics of species and the aim of studies. The advantages of applying modular theory in plant population research were also discussed.
