(1) Simulated acid rain accelerates the leaching of Ca

cations in pot soils and leads to soil acidif ication. The more intense the soil acidity is,the more aluminum will be percolated. (2) When the pHof soil and acid rain is equal to or larger than 3.0, no significant influence can be observed on the root biomass and root growth of one-year-old Chinese fir and S.superba, whereas a pH
2.0
acid rain can significantly prohibite the root growth of Chinese fir, especially for fine roots. At the same time,
S.superba
is less obviously affected. (3) When the content of soil active aluminum reaches to 30.2mg?100g soil)

, these parameters are 40.6mg?100 g soil)

and 15.8 respectively. (4) S.superba possesses higher resistence to acid rain and soil acidification than Chinese fir.

The protein productivity and population carrying capacity of various forms of agroecosys tems in Miyun, Beijing are simulated with compartment-matrix models. Effective measures are proposed to combine animal husbandry and farming for the improvement of diets and system's population carrying capacity.

Sampling plot researches revealed significant effect of forest litter on soil fertility, soil conservation, water regulation and soil temperature and humidity. It is also found that when Chinese arborvitae is property mixed with Chinese pine, it can remedy the defects of pure stands and improve the overall ecological benefits. Therefore Chinese pine and Chinese arborvitae mixed forests are considered to be widely prospective in mountainous areas end their litters should be strongly preserved.

The biological clock in marine invertebrates, with special reference to Crustacea, is accounted in two aspects: namely, rhythm and mechanism. The former sonsists of three topics, i.e., tidal thythm, lunar rhythm and diurnal rhythm, and the latter deals mainly with metabolism and hormone, taking chromatophorotropic hormone secreted by Sinus and X glands inside the eye-stalk of schrimps and crabs as an example, which is responsible for the diurnal color change in Crustacea. It is considered that in future research , more attentions should be paid to the important role of hormones in timing mechanism and in the control and regulation of physiological rhythms of biological clock.

This paper describs kinds of fire, its effect on various components of ecosystem, adaptive characteristics of plant species to it, dependence of ecosystem on it and its role in the management and maintainence of ecosystem. It is considered that, as an important environmental factor in the evolution of various species of many ratural ecosystems on the earth, fire plays an important part in maintaining naturally functioning ecosystems and in helping to determine the structure and distribution of many of the world's plant and animal communities. To preserve an ecosystem, it is necessary to preserve all ecological processes under which that ecosystem evolved, including periodic big fires.

Through measuring the oxygen consumption and energy budget of
Crocidura lasiura
in summer and winter, following results are obtained: 1.The oxygen consumption of
C.lasiura
is lower in winter than in summer under the same temperature controlled in lab.,but under natural ambient temperature, the oxygen consumption of
C.lasiura
is significantly higher in winter than in summer (p<0.01). 2. The food intake of
C.lasiura
is higher in winter than in summer, and the energy intake in winter and in summer corrected by W
0.75
are significantly different (p<0.05). 3. Both the digest efficiency and assimilation efficiency are lower in winter than in summer, with significant differences between these two seasons (p<0.05).

In the leaching process, the concentration or caicium declines, but no remarkable difference has been found with different acid rains. As for the concentration of alumunium, there is no distinct change after leaching with acid rain of pH>3.0, but it's markedly increased after acidic leaching of pH2.5 Consequently, the declination of Ca/Al ratio is the result of leaching process when the pH of acid rain is atove 3.0. Only when pH<2.5, the leaching of acid rain starts to reduce this ratio. The declination speed becomes slower with the intensification of leaching.

The roles and functions of ecology in the progress of modern science are described. As pointed out in the paper, ecology in modern time has developed into a science to view the world from human angles, which has great influences on the progress of modern science. Considering from the social functions of science, ecology will play a more significant role, instead of saying that biology represents the developmental trend of modern science.

Serious situations and impacts of water yield reduction in Lijiang River basin are illustrated, according to investigations at the upper reaches of the river basin and in Guilin city. Based on long-term forest hydrological research, it is fully expounded that water yield reduction is induced with severe deforestation. From the strategical point of view, it poses ten comprehensive approaches, which are of significance in both theory and urban ecological construction.
