An analysis of field yields and pot biomass during 1983 and 1984 indicated that corn, soybean, sunflower and sweet clover all caused evident soil sickness due to continuous cropping. The sickness could be released by means of soil sterilization. The inoculation with cultured enrichment liquids of soil microorganisms from continuous cropping plots restrained crop growth to a certain extent. Meanwhile, continuous cropping increased the number of fungi (F)and nematode, decreased the number of bacteria (B), root nodule and the B/Fratio in soybean root zone and root surfaces.

From the ecological point of view, the relationship between satsuma orange fruit quality and ecological conditions of the citrus growing area in China was investigated. In order to improve the fruit quality of satsuma, the author suggests, (1) to choose those areas to growing citrus where the ecological condition is suitable for citrus; (2) to build shelter-belt for improving ecological conditions of the citrus plantation; (3)to improve the capital construction of the citrus plantations for increasing the capability of citrus trees against natural calamities; (4) to improve technology of culture and management and popularize the fine strains of the citrus.

The results are reported in this paper of a faunal and ecological investigation of chigger mites in Dongning and Luobei counties of Heilongjiang province and Helong county of Jilin province during 1980—1983. 1. 15 species belonging to 6 genera of the chigger mites were recorded from the three regions. The predominant species are Neotrombicula pomeranzevi and N.gardellai. The composition of species of chigger mites varies with different habitats, season and hosts. 2. The hosts with higher infested rates by chigger mites are: Clethronomys rutilus, 92.0% and C. rufocanus, 81.3%. Microtus fortis and Eutamias sibiricus have higher infested indices by the mites, which are 22.4 and 21.9 respectively. 3. The seasonal distribution of species of chigger mites are: N. tamiyai and Miyaterombicula escensis found mainly in summer, and N. gardellai, N. microti, N. pomeranzevi and Leptotrombidium zeta in summer-autumn.

The injury responses of several woody plants to exposure of SO2 and HFalone and in combination under artificial fumigation were studied, from which several results emerged; The electro-conductance increased in foliage exposed, and generally this change coincided with the appearance of perceptable damage of leaves. The production of injurious ethylene in foliage of Camphortree, Chinese Redbud and Glossy Privet increased, and in combined exposure with high HF concentration, it increased markedly. S accumulation in foliage of Camphortree, Japanese viburnum and Chinese Redbud increased, but in combined exposure of Glossy Privet and Sweet Osmanthus leaves, it remained unchanged or decreased. Fcontent of exposed leaves was generally higher than the control. The presence of SO2 reduced Faccumulation in foliage, but the 3 times rise of HF concentration brought about its sharp increase.
Effects of Acid Rain on Activities of Soil Microorganisms

The effects of acid rain in Chongqing region on biochemical intensities of soil microorganisms and activities of soil enzymes were studied in 1984—1986. Acid rain reduces soil ammonification and nitrification, increases cellulose decomposition, but has little effects on humus decomposition and nitrogen fixation. The activities of soil proteinase, invertase and catalase were reduced, while the activity of phosphatase was increased markedly.
Ecological Factors Affecting the “Transference of Sheep from North to South”

    Asbtract ( 1198 )   PDF (395KB) ( 251 )
The climatic and topographic conditions were investigated and a trial was made to raise sheep in south China. It was found out that both the quality of wool and reproductive performance of sheep were better in the south than in the north grassland areas. Great significance was attached to the broadened raisement of sheep in the south for exploiting mountainous areas and stablizing ecological equilibrium as well as for the development of our textile industry.

Three types of ecological agriculture have been identified in many year's of practice: (1) Space-structural type;(2)Circulatory-use type; (3) Integral-use type. Favourable conditions exist for developing the space ecological agriculture in China. Ecological agriculture possesses many good qualities:high efficiency and low cost, harmless and poisonless, high and stable yielding and good circling.

In a preliminary statistics, 424 woody plant species in 216 genera and 87 families were recorded in JQNR. There were relict species of the Tertiary Period and endangered species which were focally protected by the nation. Floristic analysis of woody plant genera show that the region was dominated by subtropic floristic elements. Forest vegetations in JQNR were classified into four vertical zones and ten ecotypes and were described respectively in the paper.

Forrester's system dynamic language and Odum's energy-flow language are widely used in ecosystem analysis. This paper makes an introduction of and a comparison between the two languages.
An Approach to the Agro-ecological Effects of Lowland-upland Rotation
    Ye Peitao

    Asbtract ( 1226 )   PDF (458KB) ( 200 )
In consideration of the low elevation and high under groundwater level in Honghu county, the agricultural and ecological benefits of lowland-upland rotation were discussed from the oxidation-reduction theory. The rotation years of water-dry shift for cotton cultivation were suggested at 6-7 years and dry-water shift for rice cultivation at 4 years, which might facilitate the fuller circling of soil nutrients and the continuous increasement of yield productions. Conditions for the optimum ecological benefits were also discussed.

This paper indicated that planting Elaeagnus moorcroftii on saline-alkaline soils can ameliorate the nature of soil, lower groundwater level, improve forest microclimate, affect succession of vegetations and contribute to the improvement of ecological environment.

IBM computer was used for selecting ecological factors affecting the migration of third generation of rice leafroller in Zhengzhou region. 4 major factors were selected out from 384 parameters and a forecasting model was constructed with these 4 factors. The abundance of rice leafroller in 1986 predicted by the model was agreed with reality.

An anatomic observation was made of the roots of 15 genera species belonging to 10 families of monocotyledons in different eco-environments. The results showed that root structures were adaptable to the eco-environment the species located. From hydrophilous to xerophilous, the width of Casparian strip and the rate between stele diameter and root diameter increased, while the rate between total sectional areas of vessels and area of stele decreased.
