Abstract: Long-Term Fcological Research (LTER) has been focused on the monitoring and controlling the factors that influence the ecological process in a long period. The results are also the basis for the ecological assessment and management. Referring to the experiences of long-term research in international perspectives, this paper attempts to elucidate the problems, research contents, research trends and solutions of LTER with the expansion of temporal and spatial scales. It also has an instructive role in the long-term research, the construction of ecological research network and the terrestrial assessment in China.

Key words: Long-term ecological research, Temporal and sp.atial scales expansion, Ecological research network, Development trend
